TikTok Influencers Driving Parallel Trade for Unlicensed Slimming Drug

An underground market for unapproved slimming medications is propelled by social media fitness personalities and vendors on messaging platforms, based on new investigations.

Investigational Drug Gaining Popularity Online

The experimental drug, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed weight-reducing properties. Followers are encouraged to message these accounts privately for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.

Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and claims of next-day UK delivery. Sellers market the substance there before directing customers to other platforms for transactions.

Learning About The Experimental Drug

Retatrutide is an experimental injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist individuals lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.

Medical Experts Voice Concerns

However, doctors and chemists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unlicensed drug in the UK is worrisome and could lead to users injecting products of uncertain source.

Several professionals stated the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising price of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Legal Position and Implementation

Marketing retatrutide on social media or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Several content creators attempt to sidestep the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and distribution can still violate medicines, advertising, and customer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.

Platform Response and Material Elimination

Based on the social media company, the service has removed violative material and banned associated keywords and search suggestions. The company stated it was committed to maintaining the platform secure and investing in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Marketplace Activities

Investigations also discovered communities with up to nine thousand members selling retatrutide using Telegram's integrated search feature, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of members, populated with photos of slimming results, glowing reviews and step-by-step guides for preparing or administering at home.

Within moments of joining one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases occur. The vendor provided an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a alleged testing documentation. None inquired about body mass, medical conditions or past usage.

Product Details and Costs

Inside these groups, messages show dark colored packages with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between powder vials, prepared at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens usually priced at £160 for 20mg. When asked how much time a pen should be used, sellers give conflicting answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Moderation and Safety Actions

A representative for Telegram said it actively moderated harmful content on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Cautions

“Individuals are injecting substances they cannot confirm. Although the science behind retatrutide is sound, these online products may not contain what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor connected the surge in demand to recent cost increases for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are using social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she explained.

Her staff has already encountered individuals harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Position

A representative from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any item “falsely representing itself as a company investigational product not yet authorized … may expose patients to potentially significant medical dangers”.
